It was a beautiful, sunny, ....cold morning for a triathlon.
We awoke at 6 a.m. and I proceeded to eat a piece of ezekiel bread with chunky peanut butter, half a banana, a protein shake, and about 6 glasses of water.
John and I then walked with the group and all of our gear from our hotel to the college pool. My hands were bright red from the cold.
We set up my transition station and then it was already time to get my goggles on and jump in the pool.
My number out of 450 was #4. In case you didn't know they number you by your swim time from slowest to fastest. Yup, 4th slowest swimmer out of 450.
Maybe I was the slowest.
Because 1,2, and 3 got to go before me. ....just a little embaressing, itimidating, whatever you want to call it.
The swim was so hard. I think I panicked because I still didn't feel comfortable in the water and then my calf cramped. The cramp actually went away 2 days later.
After the swim, I jumped onto my bike and felt like a new person. I was able to pass a few people on the uphills and it was quite enjoyable riding along the river.
As I rode, I noticed a black and white kitty off the side of the road up a hill. He was pouncing around, tail twitching not noticing the panting humans around him.
Then it was time for the best part....the run!
The run was on a beautiful trail along a creek and then it turned sharply up the side of a mountain. They said it was a hill, but this was straight up with slippery shale for about a half of a mile. I was able to keep a pretty good pace for most of it but had to slip into a fast walk for a ways out of fear of sliding. After that though, it was all down hill. With the hill finished I sprinted and passed about five more runners, two of which were on my team and had gotten out of the pool 5 minutes ahead of me. It was inspiring to know I could catch them. :)
All in all not bad for a first. 1:57:59.
Kind of slow, but you have to start somewhere. I think I placed 168 out of 233 women. Good thing I know how to run!
Me and my team mates. I am in the obnoxious pink. ;)
Afterwards, I ran back to the hotel for a nice hot shower and a cute hat.
Will I do it again?
Maybe next year.
Wow so proud of you!!! You are an inspiration to us all!! Wish I had half of your drive!
